Students past their first year of study can begin to enjoy a wider variety of literature. Most students stay in a guided course such as Music Tree or Music Pathways throughout their elementary study, but I incorporate supplementary literature to meet the individual needs of each student. Students past the elementary stage usually work from an anthology like Celebration Series or The Developing Artist. Students experience a broad scope of music from many time periods and composers, including many living composers writing in all kinds of styles.
I do not regularly include pop music or sacred or worship music in the student's curriculum, but if that is an interest of the student, I am happy to help them learn the skills necessary to enjoy those styles.
All students follow MTAC Certificate of Merit as part of their study. CM, as we call it, provides a balanced program of technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, music history and repertoire. If they so desire, they may choose to enter annual evaluations held each year in either February or March. There are also a number of other festival opportunities they may choose to enter as well. Students with interest in competitions and festivals should indicate their interest to me early enough to choose literature wisely.
